Licensed & InsuredLA #562192
The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program (LFHP) reimburses qualifying homeowners up to $10,000 toward a new IBHS FORTIFIED roof, and only an IBHS FORTIFIED certified contractor is allowed to build one. Patriots’ Roofing is a certified installer and a GAF President’s Club contractor, licensed in Louisiana under #562192, so we can build the roof that earns the designation the program rewards.
What is the Louisiana Fortify Homes grant?
The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program is run by the Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI). It reimburses approved homeowners up to $10,000 toward building a new roof to the IBHS FORTIFIED Roof standard, the same standard built to survive high wind, wind-driven rain, and hurricanes. The idea is simple: a roof that stays on protects everything underneath it, and a stronger roof can also lower what you pay to insure a Gulf Coast home.
Two things matter most about how the program works. First, it is awarded by lottery, not first-come. Registration windows open periodically, and applicants are selected at random rather than in the order they apply. Second, the eligible parishes and the funding available change from round to round. Because of that, the most reliable step is to confirm the current round and register during the open window at ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes.
This page describes our FORTIFIED roofing service for Louisiana homeowners who want to pursue the grant. It is not the government program itself, and we are not the Louisiana Department of Insurance. For official rules, deadlines, and registration, always go to ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes. What we do is build the certified FORTIFIED roof the program is designed to reward, across Acadiana and Southwest Louisiana.
Who Qualifies for the Louisiana Fortify Homes Grant?
The state sets the exact rules each round, but most programs share the same core gates. Knowing them up front saves you from chasing a grant your home cannot land.
- Owner-occupied primary residence with a Louisiana homestead exemption (condos and mobile homes do not qualify)
- The home is in good general repair, with no major existing damage
- Active wind or hurricane insurance coverage in force, plus flood coverage if your home sits in a flood zone
- You cover the cost of a certified IBHS Home Evaluator to inspect and verify the work
- The new roof is built to earn the IBHS FORTIFIED Roof designation by a certified installer
- Your parish is participating; Lafayette is covered, and parishes such as Calcasieu (which includes Lake Charles), Acadia, and Jefferson Davis have been included as the program expands
Funds are capped and applicants are chosen by random lottery, so no contractor can promise you an award. What we can do is build a roof that earns the FORTIFIED designation, so that if you are selected your project is ready to qualify. Serving Lafayette? Start on our Lafayette roofing page. In the Lake Charles area? See our Lake Charles roofing page. Confirm the current round at ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes.
FORTIFIED Roof, Silver & Gold
Each designation builds on the one before it. The Fortify Homes grant supports building to the FORTIFIED Roof level, the foundation the other two are built on.
FORTIFIED Roof
A sealed roof deck, stronger edges, and better-attached shingles so the roof resists wind and keeps water out even if shingles are lost.
FORTIFIED Silver
Everything in Roof, plus upgrades that protect against wind getting into the home through attached structures and openings.
FORTIFIED Gold
Adds a continuous load path tying the roof, walls, and foundation together so the whole home works as one unit in extreme wind.
IBHS FORTIFIEDCertified Installer
Only a Certified Installer Can Build It
Here is the part that decides which roofer you call. A FORTIFIED roof can only be installed by an IBHS-recognized FORTIFIED certified contractor, and the work must pass an independent evaluation to earn the designation. If the roof is not built and verified to the standard, the grant does not apply, no matter how good the install looks. Patriots’ Roofing is a certified installer, so the roof that protects your home and the roof the program rewards are one and the same.
- Fifth-generation, family-owned roofers, founded by the O’Brien family in 1836, with nearly two centuries of craftsmanship behind the name
- Built to the IBHS FORTIFIED Roof standard by trained, certified crews
- Backed by GAF, as a President’s Club and Master Elite contractor, with a 50-year Golden Pledge warranty on qualifying installs
- Independent evaluation so your roof actually earns the designation the grant requires
- Licensed in Louisiana (#562192) and a member of the Home Builders Association of Greater New Orleans
How We Help You Pursue the Grant
- Check the current round. We point you to ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes so you can confirm the open registration window and enter the lottery for your address.
- Free roof estimate. A local team member inspects your roof and gives you a clear, written plan for a FORTIFIED roof, with financing available for any balance.
- Coordinate the evaluation. A FORTIFIED roof requires a certified IBHS Home Evaluator. We build to exactly what that evaluation checks for.
- Install to the FORTIFIED standard. Our IBHS FORTIFIED certified crews build your new roof to spec, with sealed deck, stronger edges, and ring-shank nailing.
- Earn the designation. An independent evaluation certifies the roof so it can carry the IBHS FORTIFIED Roof designation.
- Pursue your reimbursement. If you are selected, your designated FORTIFIED roof is what the program reimburses, up to $10,000.
Louisiana Fortify Homes Grant FAQ
How much can the Louisiana Fortify Homes grant pay?
The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program, run by the Louisiana Department of Insurance, reimburses qualifying homeowners up to $10,000 toward a new IBHS FORTIFIED roof. The exact amounts and the parishes covered are set by the state and can change each round, so confirm the current details at ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes.
Is the grant first-come or a lottery?
It is a lottery, not first-come. Registration windows open periodically and applicants are selected at random, so applying early does not move you up the line. The most reliable step is to register during the open window for the current round at ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes, then have a certified installer ready to build.
Who is eligible for the program?
In general, eligible homes are owner-occupied primary residences with a Louisiana homestead exemption (condos and mobile homes do not qualify), in good repair, with active wind or hurricane insurance and flood coverage if in a flood zone. The homeowner pays for a certified IBHS Home Evaluator, and the roof must earn the FORTIFIED Roof designation. Lafayette and parishes such as Calcasieu, which includes Lake Charles, have been covered as the program expands.
Can any roofer install a FORTIFIED roof?
No. Only an IBHS-recognized FORTIFIED certified contractor can install a roof that earns the designation, and the work must pass an independent evaluation. If the roof is not built and verified to the standard, the grant does not apply. Patriots’ Roofing is a certified installer.
Can you guarantee I will get the grant?
No honest contractor can. Funds are capped and selection is by random lottery, so an award is never guaranteed. What we can do is build your roof to the FORTIFIED standard so that, if you are selected, your project is ready to qualify. Start with a free estimate and check ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes for the current round.
